Claudio Calasans Not Thinking About Rematch with Moraes

0

At last year’s European Championship, Claudio Calasans Jr. let the absolute title slip through his fingers by an advantage point, losing to Sérgio Moraes (Alliance) in the final.

But the Atos black belt, who is the middleweight champion of Portugal, is raring to compete at the 2012 Euro to feel the excitement again.

“I won’t say I’m 100% confirmed, but I’ll be there if all goes well. I competed at my first European Championship in 2011, and I noted how the championship has a different sort of charm to it. The gymnasium is packed every day, with fans from all over the world and a lively crowd. The environment stimulates us to give it our all, to reciprocate to the people of Lisbon,” said Calasans.

Though the gold may have escaped him, the Atos black belt isn’t thinking about revenge on Moraes, and he explains why.

“You can’t go into a championship of the European’s level thinking about just one name. There are a lot of tough guys who are there to win it. At the last Euro I had nine matches – four at weight and five at open weight –, and I have to be really well trained to win it this season. To me every match might as well be the final, regardless of whether I know my opponent or not; so I try not to compete against the name,” he added.

“At the start of 2011, my main goals were to win the four biggest championships, the ones that count most: the Euro, the Pan, the Abu Dhabi WPJJ and the Worlds. I only came up short at the Worlds, where I tore a muscle in my shoulder at the end of my second match in the absolute, against Rodolfo Vieira. After that I still tried competing at weight, winning my first match by submission but feeling a lot of pain, which made me pull out. But I don’t regret having competed in the absolute, because I know what my chances of winning it are,” said Claudio, whose effectiveness in Jiu-Jitsu was clearly on display in the finals at the Euro, which he won by a choke from back mount, and at the Pan, which he won via wristlock.

With his sights set on the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Abu Dhabi next April, Calasans remembers that he hasn’t secured his berth there yet – he lost to Diego Borges in the final of the under-83 kg division at the tryouts in Manaus, but he guarantees he won’t be left out.

“I don’t yet know at which tryouts I’ll compete. Right now I’m in Brasília teaching seminars until the 13th, but once I’m back in São José dos Campos I’ll look at where I’m going to try and compete for a berth. One thing’s for sure, I’m not going to miss the championship in Abu Dhabi; I’ll be there going for my third title at weight and trying to get my second in the absolute. I’m coming up with subs more now, so I feel my Jiu-Jitsu is evolving more and more, and I want to keep it up in 2012. There’ll be no lack of training partners for me in doing so,” he said in finishing.

Sharpen Up Your Wrestling In The Clinch With Kenny Johnson

At the start of a match there’s the immediate desire to hook up and get down to business. But what do you do when you get involved in a clinch situation? Sometimes nerves take over and fighters forget everything they’ve learned, or worse yet they’ve never really learned what to do in a clinch situation. Most jiu-jitsu schools only teach the standard Judo style takedowns, if that. So, Kenny Johnson is going to go over positioning in the clinch, how to move in the clinch, and some different moves of the clinch. These technique are useful in the gi, or without.

He will be facing Leandro Lo, the current lightweight champion of Brazil and one of the top talents in the latest generation of Jiu-Jitsu competitors.

Now JT will get his shot at revenge before the year’s end?

Check out the special rules of the event below:

The rules and initial matchups for the December 17 Copa Pódio in Porto Alegre have been released. Part of the novelty of the event is that fans will be given a table to fill out over the course of the contest.

The 20 fights in the first stage will last 20 minutes, while the duration for the opening match, semifinals and finals will be 10 minutes, with a special rule: no points will be counted during the first five minutes.

For next year, the organization is putting together a middleweight GP. Athletes Guto Campos (Guetho) and Augusto Tio Chico (Renzo Gracie), who are in the event opener, have already guaranteed a place as seeds, according to event organizer, Jeferson Maycá.

NEW IBJJF Rules!

5

New Rules Book is available in Portuguese. The English version will be available as soon as possible.

Here is the rule book in Portugese: http://www.cbjj.com.br/docs/regrasibjjf-1aedicao.pdf

We are trying to translate some key changes in the rules to post them for you. Stay Tuned.

Some Key Points:

No points for the back if you have a body triangle or your legs crossed only if you have traditional hooks.

If you sweep and your opponent turtles and you hold it for 3 seconds you get the points for the sweep.

If you start sweeping and you don’t deliberately seek to finish the sweep and come back and preserve the position you will not recieve the advantage anymore.

Recovering the half-guard does not mean an advantage for the athlete who was or was mounted in a position of immobilization.

5.8 – Specific Cases where Advantage Points are not awarded anymore.
5.8.1 – Achieving half-guard does not warrant an advantage point for an athlete who was in mounted position or side control.
5.8.2 – Athletes who suffer a takedown from the opponent and manage to roll to top position shall no longer be awarded an advantage point by the referee.
5.8.3 – Athletes who begin a sweep movement but deliberately do not seek to complete the movement, in order to retain their defensive position, shall not be awarded an advantage point for the sweep.

That last point will take care of a lot of 50/50 and we’re being taught to be more aggressive with stalling penalties as well as enforcing the standard 20 seconds.

Miguel Torres Released By UFC Due To Rape Joke On Twitter

0

Source: mma-boxing.si.com BestofMMA.com

Recently UFC bantamweight Miguel Torres made an inappropriate joke about rape on twitter. The tweet read:

-If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone like surprises.-

Torres defended himself by saying he believes everyone should be free to joke about whatever they like. He also mentioned he was quoting from ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ and was watching it at the time. UFC president Dana White did not like the joke, and announced to Sports Illustrated that he released Torres.

SI.com: And what about Miguel Torres’ tweet from yesterday

White: This morning I’m on [Michael] Landsburg’s show, up here in Canada, and he hits me with the quote of what he tweeted. Now there’s no explanation for that. There’s absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that. And the fact that he even thinks that’s funny or that’s a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me. Again, you’re dealing with a guy that’s a smart guy, that owns his own business, that’s been one of the top fighters in the world forever. And I cut him today. He’s no longer with the UFC

SI.com: Was that announced today

White: It’s being announced right now to you. You’re the only one that knows. Miguel Torres has been cut from the UFC and his career with us now is over

SI.com: Was this the first time something’s happened with Torres? Or was it a second offense

White: No, this was the first time. And then he said he hadn’t heard what happened to Forrest [Griffin, who drew fire for tweeting "Rape is the new missionary" last month]. Really? Where do you live? What business are you in? How do you not hear about these things? You should have paid more attention. It’s to the point now where, there’s going be times when things happen and mistakes are made. I cannot defend Miguel Torres. I cannot defend what he said. What he said makes no sense other than when he says, “It was a joke.” Well, I don’t think that’s a funny joke. I think it’s disturbing.
